Thursday, June 30, 2016 - Glacier Bay National Park

We motored for a couple of hours this morning before arriving at the National Park. The only access to Glacier Bay National Park is by boat or plane. The park gets a half a million visitors a year and most of them arrive via large cruise ships.

We docked at park headquarters and did a short hike in the forest. The location of the park headquarters was under ice just over 300 years ago. After about an hour we got back on the boat and headed north into Glacier Bay.

We were fortunate to see a lot of wildlife in the bay including Sea Lions, Puffins, Bald Eagles, a Grizzly sow with three Cubs, and a dozen or so Mountain Goats.

We stopped for dinner just short of Margerie Glacier and after dinner we were able to get within about 100 yards of it. The glacier is a mile wide and twenty miles long. We did get to see a couple of calving events.

Tonight we will anchor in the bay. The crew and the food has been great.
