March 7, 2017 - Twizel

Today was the official start for John and I of the Alps2Ocean trail ride.

Last nights accommodations left a little to be desired. When signing up for this trip I had two choices for accommodations, standard or deluxe. I chose standard to save several hundred dollars. Our room had two bunk beds with very cheap mattresses and one chair. We had to pay $5 for internet (OK) but worst of all we had to pay $2 for a towel. I will be complaining about that. This morning we had breakfast at the "deluxe" hotel. It was a little speedy but very good.

Today's ride started with a 4 mile ride to the Mt. Cook Airport where we were helicoptered over the glacial river. It was only a four minute ride but it was very cool. From the drop off point we had 46 miles to Twizel. I have not ridden a bike for 50 miles since the late '80s. The rain started as soon as we got on our bikes along with a strong head wind which stayed in our faces all day. The steady rain lasted about two hours followed by two and a half hours of intermittent rain and then three hours of mostly sunny skies.

We were on double track trail or gravel roads most of the day. And rocky and bumpy is an understatement. I didn't realize how rough this would be on my arthritic right shoulder. And unfortunately I failed to bring any Vitamin I. The good news is that it made me forget the soreness in my legs and butt. All in all it was a great day with great scenery. I am glad it wasn't a mile longer.
