Sunday, March 5, 2017 - Christchurch

This morning we had about a mile walk to catch a free shuttle to the Antarctic Center which is out near the airport. On the way we stopped at a coffee shop for breakfast. We arrived at the center about 9:20 and caught the bus back at 12:30. We did see a couple of interesting movies and got a ride in a Hagglund which is an all terrain vehicle used in Antarctica. Other than that the center was a bit of a disappointment. It mostly centered on the weather, penguins and the research stations currently in use. I was looking for more on the history of exploration.

When we got back to town we walked about a mile to an outdoors store looking for some protein bars and other snack items for the first couple of days of our bike tour. No luck so we walked back to the hotel. We checked on google and found a grocery store about a mile and a quarter from here so we went back out and got our supplies.

Tomorrow morning we have about a mile walk to catch a bus for the five hour ride to Twizel where we pick up our bikes and then another bus ride to Mt. Cook Village where we will start the Alps 2 Ocean self guided mountain bike tour on Tuesday. More on the tour tomorrow.
