We had a very relaxing evening at the Lake Ohau Lodge. We had dinner and breakfast this morning with Alexandra and Dexter Loos who live on the North Island near Auckland. We left just before 9:00 and headed to the highest elevation of the entire trip at 900+ meters. It was 11 km. to that point. The track was very rocky but the grade was reasonably gradual. John waited for me at the summit. The descent was steep and very rocky. My shoulder took a real beating.
At the point where the track met a gravel road there was a sign for coffee and espresso. We were in the middle of nowhere and wondered what was up. We followed the sign arrow for about 100 yards and there was a guy in a small van with an espresso machine in the rear. So we treated ourselves to a double espresso and had lunch. The closest house was miles away. The guy said he parks there every day during the summer season to serve the cyclists on the A2O trail.
From there it was mostly downhill on gravel and paved roads to Omarama. John decided to take a 10 mile (round trip) detour to see the Clay Cliffs while I continued into town.
We are showered and have done a little grocery shopping. We are meeting Alexandra and Dexter for dinner.
