March 6, 2017 - Mt. Cook Village

We left the hotel at 6:45 to be at the coffee shop when it opened at 7:00. After breakfast it was a 25 minute walk to the bus stop. I wouldn't be surprised if that mile and a quarter trip carrying my luggage is the hardest part of my entire trip. The bus arrived at a little after 8:00 and it was a full house with a lot of luggage. The bus left at 8:30 for the five hour ride to Twizel.

Cycle Journeys, our outfitter, picked us up at the bus stop and transported us to their office where we received all of our instructions and were fitted on our bikes. Once that was completed we were transported to Mt. Cook Village where we will start the tout tomorrow. Mt. Cook is the highest point in New Zealand at 12,218'. The Village is at 2,400'.

Tomorrow we start with a 4 mile ride to the Mt. Cook airport where we will be helicoptered across a very wide braided river. There our trip will begin in earnest. Check out our trip at www.alps2ocean.com. Tomorrow's total ride will be about 50 miles, mostly downhill. Tomorrow night we will be back in Twizel.
